Polls more than 88% votes
Minister ridicules MP Arvind
BJP, Cong. lose deposits
NIZAMABAD: The TRS candidate Kalvakuntla Kavitha won the by-election to the Nizamabad MLC local authorities’ constituency with a thumping majority by getting 728 votes out of the total of 824 votes. Her rivals V. Subash Reddy (Congress) and P. Laxminarayana (BJP) lost deposits securing only 29 and 56 votes respectively.
Kavitha was polled 88.34 percent votes. Ten votes have gone invalid. The election was held following the expulsion of Dr. R. Bhupathi Reddy from the TRS and subsequently his disqualification to the Legislative Council membership.
In the first round itself Kavitha got 531votes which is far more than the magic figure of 413 to be declared the victory. In the second round she secured 197 votes.
Kavitha will have only one and a half year tenure for the remaining period of Bhupathi Reddy. She came back to active politics in the district after a gap of one year five months after her defeat in Lok Sabha elections.
The political equations in the composite district of Nizamabad will change now with her entry into the Legislative Council as she is likely to become a minister. The MLAs who are against the minister, V. Prashanth Reddy, have already started singing the song of Kavitha saying she would become a minister. They also said that development in the district came to a standstill following her absence in active public life and will gain traction henceforth.
Minister V. Prashanth Reddy congratulated Kavitha and thanked the voters for giving her a thumping victory. He said that the votes polled to Congress and BJP put together are less than the votes required to save the deposits.
In an oblique reference to the BJP MP D. Arvind, he said that where would he, who boasted, go now?
