A day after the Rajya Sabha passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, which criminalises instant triple talaq, the Opposition called out to the ruling government, the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) for not sending key bills to a select committee for review.
While speaking in the Upper House, the Leader of the Opposition, Ghulam Nabi Azad said the Triple Talaq bill was listed on priority to be reviewed by a select committee, while the Unlawful Activities Prevention Amendment Bill listed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday (today) was the second key bill to be listed for review.
"The Bill yesterday (Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill, 2019) and the Bill listed second today (Unlawful Activities Prevention Amendment Bill) were listed to go to Select Committee. Yesterday's Bill was listed at night (on Monday) we were given to understand they (government) haven't considered it for a select committee," he informed. While the Muslim Women Bill escaped a select committee review by a vote of 100 to 84 and was passed by a slim margin of 99 to 84, Azad claimed the Opposition was "concerned" at the quantum of Bills which were being cleared in this Parliament session.
While stating that the Triple Talaq Bill had failed to be referred for further review, Azad said, "The government had approached us (Opposition) asking which Bills we would like to refer to the Select Committee. They gave us a list of 23 Bills and we said that we wanted at least half of the bills to be sent to the select committee. They asked us to bring down that number to as less as we could. So the Opposition identified six Bills as A category and 2 as category B to be referred to the select committee."
