Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Sudini Jaipal Reddy (77) breathed his last at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, at around 1:30 AM on Sunday. Jaipal Reddy was reportedly admitted to AIGE with a high fever a few days ago and he was undergoing treatment until his last breath.

Jaipal Reddy hailed from Madgul Mandal in Mahbubnagar district. He joined the Congress after a successful stint in student politics at the Osmania University. He first became an MLA from the Kalwakurthy constituency during the 1969-74 tenure. During Indira Gandhi's emergency, he joined the Janata Dal.

In a career spanning over 4 decades, Jaipal Reddy was elected to the Lok Sabha 4 times and Rajya Sabha 2 times. He was a Minister in the Congress-led UPA I and UPA II regimes. He served as a Union Minister for the Information and Broadcasting, Urban Development,  Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Science and Technology portfolios.

Jaipal Reddy's mortal remains have been brought to his Jubilee Hills residence. His last rites will be performed today with several state and national-level leaders bidding a tearful goodbye.
