In a weird incident, Union Minister Smriti Irani campaigning in Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday ahead of the sixth phase of voting backfired on her when she tried to attack her opponent, Congress.

While addressing a rally in Ashok Nagar near Bhopal, Irani asked the people whether they had received farm loans waivers from the state government as promised by Rahul Gandhi.

The emphatic crowd repeatedly said, "Yes, we have.”

A video of the incident was shared by the Madhya Pradesh Congress on Twitter with the caption:

"Now even the people have started calling out their lies."

However, with the interference of manipulations in the electronic media, the authenticity of the video cannot be verified except the fact that it has been officially posted by the party.

Rahul Gandhi is contesting from Uttar Pradesh's Amethi seat against Irani. He has made farm loan waivers a big poll promise in the national election as well. The Farmers' distress has been a highlight of the Congress's election campaign, with the party announcing a separate budget for farmers aimed at farm loan waivers and fairer prices for crops.

Several BJP leaders, including PM Narendra Modi, have frequently attacked the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh on the issue of farm loan waivers - one of the key pre-polls promises made by the party. Inability to pay farm loan had been behind several suicides in the past few years and farm loan waiver had been one of the key promises of the party.

The Congress had won elections in three states last year where it had promised farm loan waivers. Rahul Gandhi has been often seen bragged about implementing the loan waivers immediately after his party came to power in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
