Senior BJP leader and Union Minister of state for Railways Rajen Gohain has announced that he will not be contesting this Lok Sabha polls. 

Talking to the media in Delhi, Mr Gohain said that he would not contest polls till the molestation charge labelled against him is cleared. He, however, expressed that he will be actively participating in the election campaigns in the State to help the party in every possible way.

However, Rita Nath Gohain, wife of the BJP leader, has expressed her desire to contest the election in BJP ticket from Nagaon.

Mr Gohain who represented the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Nagaon said that he would campaign for the party.

In August 2018, a case was filed under sections 417 (punishment for cheating), 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the minister at the Nagaon Sadar police station for allegedly raping and threatening a 24-year-old married woman in Deurigaon area of Nagaon district.

Gohain has served four terms as a Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha. He has represented the Nowgong constituency since 1999 – having been re-elected in 2004, 2009 and 2014. Gohain has been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party since 1991
