Amravati: Eluru town in Andhra Pradesh has witnessed a mysterious illness making hundreds of people sick with complaints of multiple symptoms for two days. Reasons for the disease is not yet identified, but the town is gripped with fear due to this unknown disease. Nearly 340 people were rushed to hospital after they complained of epilepsy, headache and muscular pains. One person died and 168 have been discharged as per government doctors’ report on Monday evening. More than 60 doctors including specialists are monitoring the situation and household health survey was conducted in 58,000 houses to know the facts.

As per the Collector’s report, sickness did not spread from person to person (not contagious) and no age restriction for the sickness. People who drink only mineral water also fell sick along with areas where municipal water is not available, which shows the cause is not water.

Vice President Venkiah Naidu expressed shock on this undiagnosed illness and made a call to District collector for first hand information. Vice President had a word with Director of AIIMS of Mangalagiri and Delhi regarding the situation in Eluru. AP CM Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy visited Eluru government hospital on Monday and assured them of all help and enquired about the medical assistance for the patients.

As per the Government officials, tests of drinking water, presence of metals in water and virus reports are all normal.

Centre to send three member team to Eluru

Centre on Monday said that a three-member team of medical experts will rush to Eluru on Tuesday. Union Ministry of Health said that Dr. Avinash, virologist from National Institute of Virology, Pune, Dr. Sanket kulkarni, Deputy Director and public health expert from National centre for Disease Control, Delhi, Dr. Jamshed Nayar,an associate professor from AIIMS will rush to Eluru.

Anti-mosquito fogging is suspected initially

Reasons for the sickness not yet confirmed but few say that Organo Chlorine or anti -mosquito fogging may be the reason, which is just an initial suspicious. Final conclusion may be known once the reports of blood samples sent to Delhi for testing are received. Doctors could not trace the reasons through CT scan or blood tests or through Cerebral Spinal Fluids tests as of now.

Most affected are of age 20 to 30 and children below 12 years as per the information received by doctors of government hospital in Eluru.
