As announced by the director, Omung Kumar, the Vivek Oberoi starrer- PM Narendra Modi is set to release on 5th April before the Lok Sabha Elections. However, the Election Commission of India had issued a notice to the producers to seek their comments if it is possible to delay the release of the film.

The Congress and Communist Party of India (Marxist) had demanded that the film's release should be postponed till the seven-stage Lok Sabha elections are over. On 20th March, K Mahesh, East Delhi Returning Officer issued notices to the production house and music company of the movie (T-series) and two leading newspapers(The Daily and Dainik Bhaskar) for publishing ads of the film in violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

The Opposition parties claimed that there was "political intent" in the release of PM Narendra Modi while complaining to the EC saying that the film will be acting as an advertisement for the BJP.

The biographical drama has been under controversy since it was announced. The trailer of the movie was bashed for glorifying Mr. Modi. However, according to The Times of India, the film’s producer, Sandip Singh came forward to rubbish the claims, saying that the film will have a great substance and a story worth telling.
